Patriotism?

I live in an area where there is a lot of lip service to patriotism. I’m not going to make a judgement on how much actual patriotism there is but the level of knee-jerk, irrational “love it or leave it,” near jingoism that comes up in regular conversation is staggering.

it’s not just the nation or the military. Is the near worship of the flag and the uniform and every symbol as a symbol and not as a representation of a larger idea.

And then I take pictures like these.

So many military graves, so little maintenance.

One of many tattered and broken American flags. The Confederate flags and the graves, to which they were attached, seemed quite well maintained though.
